Do You Shop Your Closet?
Do you shop your closet? I found this simple but cute outfit in my closet. Let me tell you how.
Do you ever stand in front of your closet and say, “I have absolutely nothing to wear?” Well, you’re not alone. I do that all the time and I could open a small boutique in my house. I think one of the reasons we feel we have nothing to wear is because we have so much stuff we become overwhelmed. We can’t see everything and forget we have certain things. How often do you find an item with the tags on it and don’t remember when or how you got it? Lol This is just what we do.
We need to change that, not only for the clutter but to save MONEY!!! We keep buying things we don’t need because we don’t know what we have. So here’s what we’re going to do!
When I cleaned out my closet I found these cargo Leggings that I bought almost 5 years ago and didn’t know I had. Tried it on with different things in my closet and loved how this looked.
Step #1 Clean your closet
You can stop side-eyeing me, I already know. I didn’t want to clean mine either, but I did. I had to because the thought of going into my closet was mentally draining. Things were in the way, I was tripping over my shoes, shopping bags were everywhere and I just gave up. That’s the worst thing you could do because that’s when you shop! You shop to avoid your closet at all cost. (My closet pics at the bottom)
Step #2 Rediscover what you have/Throw it out
That’s one of the hardest things for me to do. But if it’s no longer your style, if it’s damaged or doesn’t fit, throw it out, give it away or sell it on Poshmark. If it’s something that can be saved and just needs altering, that’s OK to keep. Just make sure you have it done soon and it doesn’t sit there for the next few years.
Step #3 Separating
Separate the things you love from the things you like. If you love it, you’ll wear it often.
Separate the basics from Fancy. Basics are your Jeans, Tank tops, Sweaters, Cardigans and T shirts. These items are essentials you would just throw on but put pulls most outfits together.
Fancy ( I just like the word) is your Brunch items, Dresses, Print blouses, Skirts, Sheers an sequin items, Statement pieces... Pieces you would put more effort into.
Step #3 Organize by color
I don’t know about you but this helps me so much. Sometimes in my head I’ll tell myself I bought something a while back and won’t remember what it was but will always remember the color. So, once I start going through that color VOILA!!! Lol Never fails. Sometimes we’re just visual and Color organizing saves us time from going through every section of our closet.
Ok, So now that we’ve done all of that and we can see what we have, you’re going to need a Full length mirror. This is a must, because you need to see what pieces look like when you’re trying things on in your closet.
After you’ve looked at everything. you’ll probably notice that you may need things to go with what you have. ONLY buy things that will complement what you already have. ONLY buy key pieces. If you have over 3-5 items that will go with a pair of pants you already own, you don’t need to buy anything else for that item.
Shoes and Accessories are great to have near by when you’re trying things on because if you don’t like how something looks you’ll be surprised how you could change the entire look with a belt, necklace, hat or shoes.
Here’s a list of items you may need while organizing your closet
Velvet hangers (Prevents clothes from slipping off)
Hooks For belts and bags
Shoes Boxes (Clear bins from Ikea)
Jewelry Organizer (80 Pockets)
Here’s one of my closet. (Bedroom) I’ll show the other closet once I’m done.
Still working on it but I wanted you to see the progress so far. Anywho, I hope this was helpful, I know organizing is not easy. Take it day by day and Step by step. Don’t feel guilty if you can’t do it right away. It can be overwhelming, especially if you have a busy life.
